News » We mourn the passing of our beloved Tatamkhulu Nelson Mandela

The 1820 Settlers National Monument was rededicated in a moving ceremony on 16 May 1996 by Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on completion of the restoration of the building following the devastating effects of a fire in August 1994.

Councillors, Members and Staff were extraordinarily priviledged to meet him on this occasion and he took everyone's breath away when he greeted each one of us by shaking our hands with the words: "It is a great honour to meet you".

We were further honoured by his presence in the Monument when Rhodes University awarded Tatamkhulu Nelson Mandela an honorary doctorate in 2002, and when an honorary doctorate was bestowed on his wife, Graca Machel in 2007, and again when he attended his grandson's graduation from Rhodes in 2009.

Tatamkhulu Mandela was a giant in generosity and grace and an inspirational world leader. The Grahamstown Foundation is committed to his legacy of justice and peace and to the development of the youth through inspiring programmes in arts, science and education.

We commemorate his extraordinary life with Gcina Mhlophe's poem "Leader Remember" which is shared with you here with the kind permission of Sis Gcina.

Hamba kahle Tatamkhulu Mandela.
